36 Hours, a VIAIR 88P, and a Titanium Exhaust: A Rush Install Story
The Phone Call
At 4:30 on a Thursday in March 2025, I was finishing warranty notes when my lead tech leaned into the office and said, 'the compressor bracket isn't going to work.' We had 36 hours until a customer's truck was supposed to leave for a weekend trail event.
It wasn't the compressor's fault. It was mine.
I run the service side at a 4WD shop. In eight years, I've handled more than 100 rush installs. And every once in a while, one reminds me why you verify before you promise.
What Was Supposed to Happen
The customer, Mike, had booked a rush install before a desert trip. He wanted to air down on the trail and air back up before heading home. He asked for a VIAIR 12V air compressor. On paper, a hard-mounted setup made sense. We ordered a kit, a small tank, and a universal mount bracket.

Why not just order a different onboard kit? Because the event was in 36 hours, and the exhaust routing was the problem. A different compressor would hit the same wall. The only fast fix was to stop trying to force metal into a space that was already occupied.
So we made a custom cradle behind the rear seat, wired a fused Anderson-style connector to the battery, and secured the 88P so it wouldn't rattle around. It's not a hard-mounted system. It's a very well-secured portable system.
To be clear, the 88P is not the answer for every customer. If you need air lockers, air tools, or you're airing up 40-inch tires all day, buy a hard-mounted system with a tank. If you mainly need tire inflation after a trail run, a portable is often enough. Mike was in the second category. That's the honest way to look at it.
The Test
Before I handed the keys back, I wanted to see it work. We connected the 88P to the truck battery through the Anderson connector, let the truck idle, and aired one tire down from 38 psi to 18 psi, then back to 38. It took a few minutes. It did not struggle.
We let the compressor cool, then ran the same test on the second tire. We repeated it once more to make sure the wiring stayed cool. The ambient temperature in the shop was probably 85 degrees, and the compressor kept up. That was enough for me.

Solvent-based shine sprays give a deep gloss, but they can dry out rubber if you use them constantly, especially on tires that already have years of UV exposure. Water-based dressings are easier on rubber, but they don't last as long and they don't produce that same wet look.
My general rule for customers: use a water-based dressing. Don't spray the sidewall every week as if it's part of an oil change. And don't spray directly onto the tire. Spray it on an applicator pad or a cloth first, then wipe the sidewall. That keeps overspray off wheels, brakes, and the ground.
There's also a bigger point. For an off-road truck, tire shine is about cosmetics. The real enemies are UV damage, dry rot, and running too much pressure for the weight of the rig, or too little on sharp rocks. Park it out of direct sun when you can. That does more for tire health than any dressing.

That text relaxed something in my chest.
Even after we delivered the truck, I kept second-guessing. What if the portable wasn't enough? What if he'd expected a compressor tucked under the hood? It wasn't until his text arrived that I exhaled.
I only started checking before ordering after a rush install like this one proved me wrong. I used to think a universal bracket was universal. It isn't. The rule I use now: before quoting a rush job, put the vehicle on a lift. Photograph the frame area you plan to use. If there's an aftermarket exhaust, suspension, or bumper, assume it changes everything. This takes fifteen minutes. It saves days.

No single air compressor fits every vehicle. The right answer depends on what the customer needs, what the vehicle allows, and how many hours are left before the event starts.
